Kids get ethical clothes

A range of ethical children’s clothes has been launched by the Bishopston Trading Company.

The company has launched an expanded range of Fairtrade clothes for babies and children as part of its spring collection.

Clothes for girls made from organic cotton include embroidered dresses, skirts with applique and pretty sun tops. Boys can choose from calico shirts, denim trousers, dungarees and short and long sleeved tee-shirts.

Bishopston has worked for more than 20 years with weavers and tailors in the village of K. V. Kuppam, southern India, where it provides employment for more than 500 people.

Carolyn Whitwell, director of Bishopston Trading Company, says: “Parents have always liked the fact that our clothes look good but are hardwearing — and, increasingly, they are also pleased to buy clothes which have been ethically produced.”

“K. V. Kuppam offers workers — who are often parents with small children — secure employment in safe conditions. Rather than having to leave their families to find work in distant towns and cities, they can remain close to their children. The factory also offers a creche for working parents which allows them to visit their babies during the day.”
